Chronic Sinusitis Interfering With Your Life? 4 Ways To Treat The Problem

Health & Medical Blog

Sinusitis is the inflammation of the nasal cavity. You can have sinusitis in one or both sinuses. In mild cases, the symptoms will go away in a few days. However, if you suffer from chronic sinusitis, the symptoms will continue to return. In most cases, chronic sinusitis is caused by either infection or polyps inside the nasal cavity. If you've been diagnosed with sinusitis, you should know that treatment is available. Here are some steps you can take to relieve the symptoms associated with sinusitis.

Increase Your Fluid Intake

If you're suffering from chronic sinusitis, you should be increasing your fluid intake. Keeping yourself properly hydrated throughout the day will help thin out your nasal secretions, which will allow them to drain properly. Limit your consumption of alcoholic and caffeinated beverages, since they can dehydrate you.

Keep Your Sinuses Moisturized

Dry air can irritate your sinuses, which can cause increased sinus pain and pressure when you're suffering from sinusitis. Keep your sinuses moist by increasing the moisture in the air. Keep a humidifier running in your home to help relieve the pain and pressure you're experiencing. You can also run a hot shower and allow your bathroom to fill with steam. Sit in the room and breathe in the steam for about 15 minutes.

Reach for the Nasal Rinses

If your sinuses are not draining properly, you may be experiencing significant pressure. Saline nasal rinses will keep your sinuses clear so you can breathe easier. Neti pots are designed to flush your sinuses and remove the mucus that's causing the pressure. You can purchase saline nasal rinses or you can make your own at home. Be sure to use sterile, distilled water if you make your own.

Combine 1 teaspoon of sea salt and two cups of warm distilled water in your neti pot. Lay your head on a towel with one cheek resting on the towel. Place the neti spout in one nostril and slowly begin pouring the solution. The saline solution will flush out through the other nostril. Turn your head and repeat the process on the other nostril.

Consider Surgical Intervention

If home remedies are no longer alleviating the symptoms associated with your sinusitis. It may be time to consider surgical intervention. Laser surgery is used to remove the tissue and clear up the blockage that's caused by chronic sinusitis.

The information provided above will help you obtain relief from the pain and pressure of chronic sinusitis. For more information, contact a clinic like Eastern Carolina Ear Nose & Throat-Head.
